GPC drops two matches It was the Eric Johnson show Saturday for the Georgia Perimeter College men's tennis team, but the Jaguars' No. 2 singles player could not carry the team on his shoulders to its first win of the season. GPC lost a morning match at home 7-2 to Spartanburg (S.C.) Junior College as Johnson captured his singles match 8-0 and collaborated with Matthew Baker for an extra-time 9-7 win in doubles. Then Central Alabama defeated the Jaguars 5-1 in a late afternoon confrontation, called early so the winning team could head home after clinching. The Jaguars' lone point was Johnson's 6-4 singles win. GPC has finished the season with an 0-6 record. Jaguars fall to Oxford A change of scenery for the Georgia Perimeter College men's tennis team failed to produce any change in the outcome of its matches. The Jaguars hit the road Friday to play Emory of Oxford but took a 7-2 defeat. GPC's two points came on Matthew Baker's 8-5 win in singles and Baker's 8-0 doubles win with Eric Johnson. GPC dipped to 0-4 on the season. Emory of Oxford nips GPC Close, but no victory cigar for the Georgia Perimeter College men's tennis squad, which continued to gain ground Monday but fell shy of its first team success of the season. The Jaguars were edged by Emory of Oxford 5-4 on the Dunwoody Campus in a makeup of a rainout from late February. Matthew Baker accounted for half of the GPC points with 8-3 wins in singles and doubles, teaming with Eric Johnson. Karel Alejandro equaled Baker's accomplishments, winning 8-3 in singles and pairing up with Thang Pham for an 8-3 doubles triumph. GPC came close to taking its first team victory but Johnson fell 8-6 in singles. The Jaguars (0-3) were scheduled to face Spartanburg (S.C.) Junior College on Tuesday, but rain has pushed their encounter back to Saturday, April 12. On Friday, April 11, the Jaguars have a rematch at Emory of Oxford. The Jaguars’ home tennis matches are played at GPC’s Dunwoody Campus, 2101 Womack Road, Dunwoody, Ga., 30338.
Gadsen State prevails, despite Baker The GPC men's tennis team demonstrated marked improvement Saturday over its opening match but still lost to Gadsden State (Ala.) Community College 7-2 on the Dunwoody campus. Matthew Baker was the Jaguars' standout, winning his singles match 8-1 and collaborating with Eric Johnson for an 8-2 doubles victory. Johnson was competitive in his singles outing but fell short. The Jaguars failed to score another point in their second match of the season. They aim for their first victory Tuesday afternoon at home against Spartanburg (S.C.) Junior College, beginning at 1 p.m. The GPC women, also 0-2, meet Spartanburg at the same time and place. The Jaguars’ home tennis matches are played at GPC’s Dunwoody Campus, 2101 Womack Road, Dunwoody, Ga., 30338.
Jaguars drop opening match The GPC men's tennis team came up empty in its long-awaited season opener Thursday, falling 9-0 to Itawamba (Miss.) Community College on the Dunwoody Campus. No. 1 singles player Mathew Baker played well but lost 6-3, 6-2. Eric Johnson, second in the Jaguars’ pecking order, dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match. The Jaguars are resurrecting the men's program following a two-year hiatus. They dominated the National Junior College Athletic Association in the 1990s, winning four straight national titles (1998-2001) and 11 consecutive conference titles. The rebuilding process continues on March 22 with a home match against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Jaguars’ home tennis matches are played at GPC’s Dunwoody Campus, 2101 Womack Road, Dunwoody, Ga., 30338.
